Most software systems start as a tidy collection of components that call each other directly. Service A needs data from Service B, so it makes a request and waits. Simple, intuitive, and destined to become a maintenance nightmare as the system grows.

The problem isn't direct communication itself—it's the coupling it creates. When A must wait for B, and B must be available when A calls, you've created invisible dependencies that compound over time. Deploy B, and A might break. Scale A, and you need to scale B. The systems become entangled in ways that make independent evolution nearly impossible.

Event-driven architecture offers an alternative. Instead of components asking each other for things, they announce what happened and let interested parties react. This shift from imperative commands to declarative events fundamentally changes how systems relate to each other—and it's one of the most powerful tools for building software that can actually grow.

Temporal Decoupling: Breaking the Synchronous Chain

In a synchronous system, time binds components together. When you make a REST call to another service, your code stops and waits. The caller and the callee must both be operational at the exact same moment. This creates a fragile chain where any link's failure brings down the whole sequence.

Map your consistency requirements to actual business impact, not theoretical purity.

Build idempotent consumers that can safely process the same event multiple times. The goal isn't eliminating inconsistency—it's making the inconsistency window small enough and the user experience graceful enough that the system feels consistent even when it technically isn't.
