The desire for immortality may be one of those wishes that only appears coherent because we have never seriously interrogated it.

A more radical response reconceives purpose entirely. Perhaps beings of indefinite duration would develop what we might call cosmic projects: goals whose completion requires vast timescales—stellar engineering, the preservation of information across universal heat death, the exploration of possibility spaces too large for finite minds. Such projects generate their own urgency at appropriate scales.
Yet cosmic projects still require an agent capable of caring about their outcomes, and it remains an open question whether motivation can survive the removal of mortality's shadow. Existentialists from Heidegger onward have argued that being-toward-death is not incidental to human meaning but constitutive of it. If they are right, then digital immortality does not solve the problem of death; it dissolves the conditions under which meaning was possible.
