For much of the twentieth century, the history of science operated as a triumphalist genre. Great minds discovered eternal truths about nature, and the historian's task was to trace the ascending path from ignorance to enlightenment. Newton, Darwin, Einstein—the pantheon required biographers, not critics.

Then something shifted. Beginning in the 1970s and accelerating through the 1980s, a loose coalition of historians, sociologists, and philosophers began asking a different question: not how did we discover the truth, but how did particular claims come to count as truth in the first place? This was the science studies turn, and it fundamentally reorganized the field.

The consequences reached far beyond specialist debates. Once scientific knowledge became historically situated—produced by specific people, in specific places, using specific instruments and conventions—the entire relationship between history and epistemology required rethinking. What follows examines three moments in this transformation and the interpretive stakes each raised.

Social Construction Debates

Steven Shapin and Simon Schaffer's Leviathan and the Air-Pump (1985) became the paradigmatic text of the new historiography. Their reconstruction of the Boyle-Hobbes controversy over the vacuum pump did something radical: it treated Boyle's experimental method not as the natural triumph of empiricism, but as a contingent social achievement that had to be actively constructed and defended.

The argument turned on what Shapin and Schaffer called the literary, social, and material technologies of experiment. Facts did not simply emerge from nature; they required credible witnesses, standardized instruments, and rhetorical conventions for reporting. Hobbes's objections were not stupid—they were philosophically coherent alternatives that lost for reasons partly external to epistemology.

The Edinburgh School's Strong Programme, developed by David Bloor and Barry Barnes, provided theoretical backbone. Its symmetry principle demanded that historians explain true and false beliefs using the same causal categories. Truth could no longer serve as its own explanation.

Critics from traditional history of science, notably Steven Weinberg and others, objected that this approach collapsed the distinction between what actually works and what a community happens to believe. The dispute cut to the foundations of the discipline: could scientific success be explained without appealing to nature's cooperation?

Peter Galison's work on laboratory subcultures showed instruments, theory, and experiment operating on partially independent timescales.

Bruno Latour's actor-network theory, though often misread as extreme relativism, actually insisted on the agency of nonhuman entities in shaping knowledge. His injunction to follow scientists through their networks became methodological common ground, even for historians uncomfortable with his broader philosophical claims.

The productive resolution—if we can call it that—was neither realism nor relativism but a historiographical pragmatism. Historians could analyze the contingent production of scientific claims while remaining agnostic about, or even affirming, their eventual epistemic warrant. The question shifted from is it real to how did it become stable.

Charles Rosenberg's work on disease framing, and later scholarship by Steven Epstein on AIDS activism, demonstrated how medical categories were negotiated among researchers, clinicians, patients, and regulators. The social construction of illness did not mean disease was imaginary; it meant that diagnostic boundaries, treatment protocols, and epidemiological categories had histories worth investigating.

Historians of technology, building on David Edgerton's Shock of the Old and Ruth Schwartz Cowan's earlier work, dismantled linear innovation narratives. Technologies succeeded or failed for reasons entangled with labor, gender, colonialism, and infrastructure—not because they were objectively superior.

Studies of expertise, including Sheila Jasanoff's work on regulatory science, revealed how the authority of specialized knowledge is constructed differently across political cultures. The same evidence produces different policies in different jurisdictions, not through corruption but through what Jasanoff calls civic epistemologies.

Every claim to expertise carries an invisible history of who was authorized to speak, whose testimony counted, and which questions were deemed answerable in the first place.

The lasting contribution may be less about any specific theoretical position than about a habit of mind. Historians of science now instinctively ask about instruments, institutions, audiences, and controversies—not because facts are illusory, but because facts have histories.

That insight has quietly reshaped adjacent fields. When historians write about medicine, technology, environment, or expertise, they now inherit an analytical vocabulary that would have been unavailable, or unthinkable, three generations ago.
